UK ETA Becomes Mandatory for 85 Visa-Exempt Countries from February 2026

The United Kingdom is rolling out a major change to its entry rules: starting 25 February 2026, visitors from 85 countries who previously enjoyed visa-free access will now need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. Without a valid ETA (or an eVisa), travellers from those countries will be denied boarding or entry.

Under the new rule, airlines and carriers must verify digital permission before letting passengers travel. The ETA is not a visa — it’s a short-stay permit for tourism, visiting family or friends, business visits or short trips, valid for up to six months per visit.

Who Needs the ETA

  • Nationals of 85 visa-exempt countries, including major travel sources such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and many EU countries.

  • The requirement applies whether you’re travelling directly or transiting through the UK if you pass through passport control.

  • Exemptions: British and Irish citizens (including dual citizens when travelling on a valid UK or Irish passport), as well as foreign nationals already holding UK immigration status (residence, work, study visas).

How to Get ETA & What to Know

  • Applicants must use the official UK ETA application — via the mobile app or website.

  • The cost per application will be £16.

  • For most people, decision is automatic and immediate. However, it’s advised to allow up to 3 working days in case enhanced screening is needed.

  • Once granted, the ETA is linked electronically to your passport. If your passport changes, you’ll need a fresh ETA.

Why This Change Matters

  • It signals a shift toward a fully digital, pre-clearance immigration system — a “no permission, no travel” stance.

  • Travellers who assumed visa-free access must now budget for ETA, plan ahead and ensure eligibility.

  • Airlines and travel agencies must implement pre-travel checks, not just rely on visas/passport stamps.

  • For frequent flyers, travellers on short-stay visas, tour groups or business visitors — ETA becomes a mandatory step, like a visa but simpler to obtain.
