China Grants 30-Day Visa-Free Entry to UK and Canadian Citizens Starting February 17, 2026

China has expanded its visa-free entry program to include ordinary passport holders from both the United Kingdom and Canada, allowing visitors from these countries to enter mainland China without a visa for up to 30 days — starting 17 February 2026 and running through 31 December 2026.

What the Policy Means

Under the updated entry rules confirmed by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

  • Ordinary British and Canadian passport holders can travel to China without applying for a visa before departure.

  • The visa-free stay allows up to 30 days per visit for purposes such as tourism, business, family or friend visits, exchanges, and transit.

  • The policy is part of China’s broader unilateral visa-free regime, which already covers around 50 countries and aims to boost travel, trade, and cultural exchanges.

How It Helps Travelers

This change simplifies travel planning for British and Canadian visitors by removing the need to apply for and collect a visa through an embassy or consulate — a process that can take several weeks and involve fees and documentation. With visa-free access:

  • Travelers only need a valid passport and any required entry documents (like proof of onward ticket).

  • Short-term stays become easier and less costly, especially for tourism and business trips.

  • The policy encourages spontaneous travel and strengthens people-to-people links between China and the UK/Canada.

Important Tips Before You Travel

Even with visa-free access:

  • Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your planned stay.

  • Have proof of onward or return travel ready at immigration.

  • China’s visa-free stay does not replace longer-stay visas — if you plan to study, work, or live in China beyond 30 days, you will still need the appropriate visa.

Why This Is Significant

The inclusion of the UK and Canada in China’s 30-day visa-free entry list marks a diplomatic milestone and reflects stronger ties with two of the world’s major travel and business markets. It also aligns China with global moves to make international mobility easier and more streamlined for visitors from key countries.
