More than 60,300 Nigerians have been returned home since 2017 after attempting to migrate through unsafe and irregular routes abroad. The returns were facilitated through humanitarian programmes designed to assist migrants who became stranded during their journeys.
The figure was disclosed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) during a media engagement in Benin City, where officials highlighted the growing number of Nigerians who embark on risky migration journeys in search of better economic opportunities overseas.
Migrants Trapped Along Dangerous Routes
Many of the migrants traveled through irregular pathways across North Africa and routes leading toward Europe. Along these journeys, numerous individuals reportedly encountered serious challenges including exploitation, forced labour, detention, and other dangerous conditions before being assisted back to Nigeria.
Humanitarian organizations have been working to locate stranded migrants and support their voluntary return home. Beyond bringing them back safely, these programmes also provide reintegration support aimed at helping returnees rebuild their lives and regain stability.
Rising Interest in Emigration Among Nigerians
The large number of returnees reflects a broader migration trend in the country. Surveys indicate that a significant portion of Nigerians have considered leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad.
Young people, urban residents, and highly educated individuals make up a large share of those exploring relocation options. Economic challenges, job opportunities, and improved living conditions are often cited as the primary motivations for considering migration.
The Importance of Safe and Legal Migration
Migration experts continue to emphasize the importance of choosing safe and legal migration pathways. Irregular routes often expose migrants to serious risks, including trafficking networks, unsafe travel conditions, and uncertain immigration outcomes.
For individuals planning to relocate abroad for work, study, or tourism, understanding the proper visa processes and legal entry pathways is essential to avoid dangerous situations.
