Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed a three-year strategic agreement aimed at strengthening efforts to combat visa fraud and organised immigration crimes. The agreement focuses on tightening enforcement measures, improving document verification systems, and strengthening collaboration between both countries’ law-enforcement agencies.
The deal was formalised in London on March 18, 2026, with officials from both governments committing to stronger cooperation in tackling cross-border immigration offences and protecting the integrity of visa processes.
Tougher Penalties for Immigration Offences
One of the key components of the agreement is a plan to increase jail terms for individuals convicted of immigration-related crimes in Nigeria, particularly offences involving fake documents used in visa applications.
Authorities also plan to expand the legal framework that allows prosecutors to bring charges against individuals involved in immigration fraud and other border-related offences.
Stronger Document Verification Systems
As part of the initiative, both countries will work together to improve the verification of travel documents and supporting documents used in visa applications.
This includes introducing enhanced verification technologies to detect fraudulent documents and prevent their use in visa processing systems.
Expansion of Joint Immigration Crime Unit
The agreement will also strengthen the UK–Nigeria Organised Immigration Crime Unit, a joint task force dedicated to investigating and disrupting immigration crime networks.
To support this collaboration, both governments have signed multiple cooperation agreements covering data sharing, intelligence exchange, and operational coordination between relevant agencies.
The UK has also committed to providing training and operational support to Nigerian agencies responsible for border security and immigration enforcement.
Focus on Safer Migration
Another aspect of the partnership involves protecting vulnerable migrants, particularly women and children who may be exposed to exploitation through irregular migration channels. Both countries plan to strengthen safeguards and improve cooperation on migration-related protection issues.
