Mozambique has officially reinstated its mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for travellers from visa-exempt countries after resolving technical issues that had temporarily suspended the system.
Effective 31 July 2026, eligible visitors must once again obtain an approved ETA before boarding their flight to Mozambique. The requirement returns following the successful restoration of the country’s online application portal.
Why Was the ETA Requirement Reintroduced?
Mozambique first introduced the ETA requirement in 2025 as part of efforts to modernise its immigration and border management system.
However, shortly after its launch, authorities suspended the requirement due to technical problems affecting the online portal, making it difficult for travellers to complete their applications.
With the portal now fully operational, the government has reinstated the mandatory pre-travel authorisation for eligible visa-free travellers.
Who Needs an ETA?
The ETA applies to nationals of 29 visa-exempt countries travelling to Mozambique for eligible short-term visits.
Although these travellers do not require a traditional visa, they must obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure.
Travellers are advised to submit their ETA application at least 48 hours before travel to avoid delays or boarding issues.
What Is an Electronic Travel Authorisation?
An ETA is not a visa. Instead, it is a digital pre-travel approval that allows eligible visa-free travellers to enter Mozambique for approved short-term visits.
The online system enables travellers to:
- Submit their travel information electronically.
- Upload the required documents.
- Receive travel authorisation before departure.
- Complete entry formalities more efficiently.
Airlines may request proof of an approved ETA before allowing passengers to board flights to Mozambique.

If you are travelling to Mozambique from an eligible visa-exempt country, you should:
- Confirm whether your nationality requires an ETA.
- Apply online before your departure date.
- Ensure your passport meets the required validity period.
