Travelling to the United Kingdom could soon become faster for eligible passengers as the UK begins introducing new contactless eGates at its airports.
Launched on 6 October 2026, the new technology uses facial recognition to verify travellers’ identities without requiring them to place their passports on the eGate reader. The rollout will continue across UK airports, with all eGates expected to be upgraded by early 2027.
For travellers planning a UK visit, the development marks another step towards a more digital and efficient border system.
How Will the New eGates Work?
The new system is designed to make immigration clearance smoother and faster.
Instead of scanning their passports at the gate, eligible passengers will have their photographs taken. The system then compares the live image with verified passport, travel and immigration records before allowing them through.
According to the UK government, testing indicates that the new technology can be up to 25% faster than the existing passport-scanning process.
However, passengers who require additional checks may still be asked to scan their passports or speak to a Border Force officer.
Who Can Use the New Contactless eGates?
The initial rollout is limited to British citizens, beginning at East Midlands Airport. Access is expected to expand to other nationalities who are already eligible to use UK eGates as the rollout progresses.
The government has identified airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and others for the phased introduction.
Importantly, the existing eligibility rules for eGates remain unchanged.
What Does This Mean for Nigerian Travellers?
For Nigerian passport holders, the announcement does not change UK visa requirements.
Nigerians travelling to the UK must continue to meet the applicable entry requirements, including obtaining the appropriate visa where required. The new contactless technology does not automatically make Nigerian passport holders eligible to use eGates.
Travellers should also continue carrying their valid passports, even when using contactless processing becomes available to them.
Passport-free processing at the gate is not the same as travelling without a passport.
The UK Is Moving Towards More Digital Border Checks
The contactless eGate rollout forms part of the UK’s wider effort to modernise border management and improve the passenger experience.
For eligible travellers, the change could mean less time spent at immigration and a smoother arrival process. However, normal immigration and security checks will continue, and passengers may still be referred for additional verification.
