Turkmenistan Launches e-Visa System, Removes Invitation Letter Requirement for Tourists

Planning a trip to Turkmenistan? A major change to the country’s visa process could make visiting this Central Asian destination more straightforward for international travellers.

On 1 October 2026, Turkmenistan launched a new electronic visa system, allowing eligible foreign nationals to apply online. The biggest development for tourists is that a traditional invitation letter is no longer listed as a mandatory document for the new tourist e-Visa category.

What Has Changed?

Previously, travellers generally needed an approved invitation letter before they could obtain a Turkmenistan visa. The new e-Visa system introduces an online application process designed to simplify document submission and visa processing.

The platform currently lists three electronic visa categories:

  • e-TU: Tourism
  • e-BS: Business travel
  • e-HM: Humanitarian travel

The invitation-letter exemption applies to tourist e-Visa applications. Business and humanitarian applicants may still need invitations from the relevant companies, organisations or agencies.

What Documents Do Tourists Need?

Tourist applicants should prepare the following:

  • A passport valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry
  • A recent colour photograph
  • A valid email address

A travel itinerary, hotel reservation and medical insurance are listed as optional supporting documents for tourist applicants on the new system. Travellers should nevertheless check the latest instructions before submitting their applications.

How Long Does Processing Take?

The reported processing options are:

  • Regular: 7 business days
  • Urgent: 3 business days
  • Super urgent: 24 hours

The applicable visa fee is calculated during the online application process rather than being published as one fixed amount. These processing times should not be treated as guaranteed approval times.

Is the New System Ready for Everyone?

Although the e-Visa system has officially launched, early reports indicate that applicants may encounter technical limitations, including difficulty creating a new account on the portal.

Travellers should confirm that applications can be submitted successfully before making non-refundable travel arrangements. They should also remember that an e-Visa is still required; removing the invitation-letter requirement does not mean visa-free entry.

What This Means for Nigerian Travellers

For Nigerians interested in exploring Turkmenistan, the new system could remove one of the traditional hurdles associated with tourist visa applications.

However, applicants should verify their eligibility, confirm the portal’s current functionality and check the latest entry requirements before planning their trip.
