Canada Updates PGWP Eligibility: Adds 119 New Fields of Study for 2025

In a game-changing move for international students, Canada has overhauled its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility list, adding 119 new programs in healthcare, education, skilled trades, and STEM fields—and removing 178 programs no longer aligned with current labour needs.

The revised list, released on June 25, 2025, by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aims to guide students toward programs that lead to in-demand jobs, especially as Canada faces growing labour shortages in key sectors.

🎓 What Has Changed?

  • New Total: 920 eligible programs

  • 119 programs added (e.g., Veterinary Medicine, French Teacher Education, Construction Management)

  • 178 programs removed (e.g., Solar Energy, Marine Resource Management, Environmental Studies)

  • 📌 Applies to students applying for study permits on or after November 1, 2024

  • 🕓 Those who applied before June 25, 2025, are not affected

📌 Sample of New PGWP-Eligible Programs

Program Field
Veterinary Medicine Healthcare
Dentistry (DDS, DMD) Healthcare
French Language Teacher Education Education
Biology & Drama Teacher Education Education
Advanced Architectural Design STEM & Design
Landscape Architecture STEM & Design
Construction Project Management Skilled Trades
Cabinetmaking & CNC Machining Skilled Trades

These changes are designed to steer international students toward study paths that align with actual job market needs.

⚠️ Programs Removed from Eligibility

Several fields have been dropped from the PGWP list, including:

  • Solar Energy Technology

  • Drywall Installation

  • Marine Resource Management

  • Environmental Studies

  • Most transport-related and agricultural programs

These programs were removed because the related job markets no longer show labour shortages, according to government analysis.

💡 Final Thoughts

Canada’s updated PGWP list sends a clear message: study smart, work smarter. By enrolling in one of the newly approved programs, international students not only increase their chances of securing a work permit, but also position themselves to build long-term careers in a country actively seeking their skills.

Whether you’re drawn to healthcare, architecture, teaching, or skilled trades, now’s the time to plan your education with employment and immigration goals in mind.
