US to End Most Nonimmigrant Visa Interview Waivers from September 2025

Big changes are coming for travelers seeking US nonimmigrant visas. Starting September 2, 2025, the US Department of State will eliminate most visa interview waivers, meaning the majority of applicants will now have to appear in person at a US embassy or consulate.

What’s Changing?

Currently, many applicants—including children under 14, seniors over 79, and those renewing certain visas—qualify for an interview waiver. This has made the process faster and more convenient. But from September 2, these waivers will no longer apply for most travelers.

Who Still Qualifies for an Interview Waiver?

The only exceptions will be:

  • Diplomatic and official visa holders (A-1, A-2, C-3)

  • G-1 through G-4 visas

  • NATO visas (NATO-1 to NATO-6)

  • TECRO E-1 visa holders

Limited Renewal Exception

If you’re renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visa, or a Mexican Border Crossing Card, you may still qualify for a waiver—but only if:

  • You apply within 12 months of your previous visa expiring

  • You were 18 or older when your last visa was issued

  • You apply from your home country or legal residence

  • You have no previous visa refusals or ineligibility issues

However, consular officers still have the final say.

Why This Change?

According to the Department of State, the move aims to strengthen security and allow more thorough risk assessments. While this may improve vetting, it also means longer wait times for visa appointments, especially in high-demand countries.

What This Means for You

  • Expect longer processing times and limited appointment availability.

  • Plan ahead if you need a visa for travel in late 2025 or beyond.

  • Apply before September 2, 2025 if you want to take advantage of the current waiver system.

Final Tip

Stay updated on official US embassy websites and book your appointments early. These changes could significantly impact travel plans for students, business travelers, and tourists alike.
