UAE imposes rules for travelers carrying $16,000 worth of valuables

If you’re traveling through Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or Ras Al Khaimah International Airports with valuables worth more than AED 60,000 (around USD 16,300), a new customs regulation means you’ll now need to declare them online before your trip.

The policy, rolled out by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, is designed to strengthen border controls, curb illicit financial flows, and align the UAE with international financial transparency standards.

Who Needs to Declare?

  • Adults (18+) carrying high-value items over the AED 60,000 threshold.

  • Minors (under 18) — a parent or guardian must file the declaration on their behalf.

The total value is calculated by combining all qualifying items, including:

  • Cash in any currency

  • Traveler’s cheques

  • Gold, diamonds, and precious stones

  • Luxury watches and other expensive personal belongings

Passengers simply transiting through the UAE without going through passport control are exempt.

How to Declare

  • Online only via the Afseh app or declare.customs.ae

  • Log in with UAE Pass

  • Provide contact details, travel itinerary, and item breakdown (including currency type and amount)

  • Upload receipts or supporting documents if requested

  • Once approved, your clearance will appear in the “Approved Requests” section and you’ll receive an SMS and in-app notification

The process is free and typically takes just a few minutes.

Why It Matters

Authorities say the pre-screening model allows customs officers to review declarations before passengers arrive, helping:

  • Prevent money laundering

  • Reduce smuggling of high-value goods

  • Streamline clearance at airports

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Failing to declare valuables above the limit can result in:

  • Confiscation of items

  • Financial penalties

  • Possible criminal investigation

Officials emphasize that “not knowing” the rule won’t excuse travelers from penalties.

Key Takeaway

If you’re traveling with expensive items through Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or Ras Al Khaimah, declare online before you fly. It’s quick, free, and could save you from fines, delays, or worse.
