Canada has just kicked off an experiment with a new digital visa system — and the first country selected to test it is Morocco. Under the pilot launched late November 2025, a small group of Moroccan travelers who already have an approved visitor visa can receive a digital visa version in addition to the traditional visa sticker in their passport.
The goal of the pilot is to simplify and speed up travel, cutting out the usual paperwork, passport mail-ins, and long waiting for visa stamping. With a digital visa, travelers can get an encrypted electronic credential linked to their passport number. This format is compatible with airline check-in and border-control systems, meaning travelers still receive a valid visa credential without submitting their passport physically.
Key benefits of the digital visa pilot:
-
Faster processing — no waiting for visa stickers; travel documentation becomes quicker and more efficient.
-
No need to mail passports — applicants retain their passport throughout, avoiding courier delays or risk of loss.
-
More security and privacy — the digital visa is encrypted, carries the same admissibility data, and reduces forgery or tampering risks while letting applicants control what information is shared.
-
Smoother travel experience — as visa data becomes integrated with airline and border-control systems, check-ins and arrivals are expected to become more seamless.
For now the trial remains small and limited to selected Moroccan applicants. But if the pilot proves successful and the electronic visa format integrates well with airlines and immigration systems, this could pave the way for a broader rollout — potentially extending digital visas to many more countries in future.
