Travellers using Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, should prepare for a temporary disruption as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans to close the airport’s runway for approximately 25 days.
The planned closure is expected to allow FAAN to carry out essential repairs, resurfacing and expansion works on the runway. According to the latest announcement, the closure was tentatively scheduled to begin on 20 October 2026, subject to final confirmation.
Why Is the Runway Being Closed?
FAAN says parts of the runway have deteriorated, with issues including potholes and extensive surface cracking. Recent heavy rainfall has reportedly worsened the condition of the affected areas.
The planned intervention is aimed at improving the safety and operational condition of the runway, particularly ahead of the expected increase in air travel during the Christmas period.
The Project Goes Beyond Repairs
The work isn’t limited to fixing damaged sections.
FAAN also plans to extend the runway, which would allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the South-East continues to grow.
The expansion is expected to increase the airport’s capacity and improve its ability to handle larger aircraft and growing passenger numbers.
What Does This Mean for Travellers?
Passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the closure period may need to make alternative arrangements.
FAAN has advised affected travellers to contact their airlines directly for information about flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
The Authority also stated that the final dates for the closure and reopening would be announced after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
For travellers heading to the South-East, this could mean checking flight arrangements earlier than usual, particularly for trips around the busy festive period.
Why the Upgrade Matters
Owerri Airport plays an important role in connecting travellers to Imo State and the wider South-East region.
Upgrading the runway could improve the airport’s operational capacity and create room for larger aircraft to operate there as demand grows.
While the temporary closure may cause inconvenience for some travellers, the long-term objective is to improve the airport’s infrastructure and passenger experience.
