New Zealand offers 10-year visa for parents of migrants, to begin in September 2025

Starting 29 September 2025, New Zealand will introduce a new long-term visa designed to reunite skilled migrants with their parents — the Parent Boost Visa.

This significant policy shift aims to strengthen family bonds by allowing eligible parents to stay in New Zealand for up to 10 years on a multiple-entry visitor visa.

What is the Parent Boost Visa?

The Parent Boost Visa allows parents of New Zealand citizens or residents to stay for an initial 5-year period, with the possibility of applying for another 5 years — totalling up to 10 years of stay. Unlike standard short-term visitor visas, this one offers a long-term family support solution, especially for those who do not yet qualify for permanent residency.

However, it’s important to note that the Parent Boost Visa does not lead directly to permanent residency. Those aiming to settle permanently must still apply under the Parent Resident Visa or Parent Retirement Resident Visa categories.

Key Benefits:

  • Long-Term Stay: Up to 10 years total, split into two 5-year stays.

  • Multiple Entries: Travel in and out of New Zealand while the visa is valid.

  • More Time for Bonding: Spend extended quality time with loved ones.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Sponsored by a New Zealand citizen or resident.

  • Comprehensive health insurance covering up to NZD $250,000 for emergencies (minimum 1 year of coverage, with proof required throughout the stay).

  • Health checks:

    • One during the visa application.

    • A second check in the third year, done outside New Zealand.

Financial Requirements:

Applicants must meet one of the following financial conditions:

  • Sponsor’s Income: At least the median wage to sponsor one parent, or 1.5x median wage to sponsor two parents jointly.

  • Ongoing Income: Parent(s) must receive at least the New Zealand Superannuation rate (for singles or couples).

  • Savings-Based: At least NZD $160,000 for a single applicant or NZD $250,000 for a couple.

Costs and Fees:

  • Standard Visa Fee: NZD $3,000

  • Pacific Fee Band: NZD $2,450 (for eligible applicants)

  • Tourism Levy (IVL): NZD $100

  • Third-Year Health Check Fee: NZD $325 standard / NZD $240 for Pacific applicants

Why This Matters:

For migrants who have settled in New Zealand, especially skilled workers, being away from parents for long periods can be emotionally and logistically challenging. The Parent Boost Visa bridges that gap, offering a compassionate solution that aligns with the country’s efforts to retain talent and support migrant well-being.

Additionally, the new visa is part of New Zealand’s broader family reunification policy, which also includes:

  • Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa

  • Standard Visitor Visa

  • Parent Resident Visa (capped at 2,500 places annually)

  • Parent Retirement Resident Visa
