New Zealand has announced a temporary reduction in visitor visa fees for travellers from several Pacific countries, introducing a policy aimed at encouraging regional travel and strengthening relationships with neighbouring nations.
The new visa pricing will take effect from June 1, 2026, and will remain in place for a 12-month trial period while authorities monitor its impact on travel demand and migration patterns.
Lower Visitor Visa Fee Introduced
Under the temporary policy, eligible Pacific travellers will now pay NZD $161 for a visitor visa, reduced from the previous NZD $216. The new amount already includes the NZD $41 immigration levy charged on visa applications.
The discounted visa fee will only apply to applicants submitting their applications from outside New Zealand. Individuals applying while already in the country will still be required to pay the standard visa fee.
Pacific Visitors Already Pay Lower Fees
Even before this reduction, travellers from Pacific countries already benefited from lower visa charges compared to most international visitors.
For example, while Pacific applicants will temporarily pay NZD $161, visitors from many other countries typically pay around NZD $441 for the same visitor visa category.
Pacific travellers are also exempt from the International Visitor and Conservation Levy, a fee that many other international tourists are required to pay when entering New Zealand.
Countries Eligible for the Reduced Visa Fee
The temporary visa discount will apply to travellers from several Pacific nations, including:
- Fiji
- Samoa
- Tonga
- Papua New Guinea
- Solomon Islands
- Vanuatu
- Kiribati
- Tuvalu
- Nauru
- Palau
- Marshall Islands
- Federated States of Micronesia
The government says the policy is designed to improve regional mobility and strengthen ties with Pacific neighbours while evaluating the long-term impact of lower visa costs.
Some Visa Types Not Included
The temporary fee reduction does not apply to certain visa categories, including:
- Parent Boost Visitor Visa
- Group Visitor Visas
Applicants in these categories will continue to pay the standard application charges.
What This Means for International Travelers
Although the policy is targeted at Pacific travellers, it highlights a broader trend where countries are adjusting visa policies to manage travel demand and strengthen diplomatic ties with specific regions. Visa fees, travel rules, and entry requirements can change frequently depending on migration policies and international relations.
