New Zealand to scrap certified translation requirement for visitor visas from May 26

Starting May 26, 2025, New Zealand will remove the requirement for certified translations of supporting documents in visitor visa applications—a major win for travellers, especially from non-English-speaking countries.

This new policy from Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is designed to cut down costs, eliminate delays, and simplify the application process, making it easier for international visitors to explore Aotearoa’s breathtaking landscapes and culture.

🔄 What’s Changing?

Previously, non-English documents submitted with visa applications required certified translations. Now, applicants only need standard English translations, provided they:

  • Include the translator’s name

  • State their qualifications or experience

  • Feature a signed declaration that the translator is not the applicant, a family member, or an immigration adviser

While certified translations are no longer necessary, accuracy is still critical. INZ warns that unclear or poor translations may lead to visa delays or outright rejections.

“Certified translations will remain mandatory for permanent residency applications,” INZ emphasized.

🎯 Who Benefits?

This change applies only to visitor visa applicants, not residents. It is especially beneficial for:

  • 🌍 First-time travellers from non-English-speaking countries

  • 🎓 Students attending short-term study or language programs

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families visiting loved ones

  • ✈️ Last-minute travellers and tourists

  • 🧳 Frequent Australia–NZ travellers

💡 Why It Matters

Lower Costs – No need to pay for costly certified translations
Faster Processing – Avoid long waits caused by certification delays
Greater Accessibility – Easier for applicants from countries with limited access to certified translators

This aligns New Zealand’s documentation standards more closely with Australia’s visa system, signaling a broader commitment to modernizing immigration processes and welcoming more visitors.
