Nigeria and Brazil Launch First Direct Flight Under New BASA

Nigeria’s aviation sector has achieved a new milestone with the launch of the first direct flight between Brazil and Nigeria. The landmark flight, operated by Air Peace from São Paulo to Lagos, landed at Murtala Mohammed International Airport on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at 3:15 pm.

The service follows the recently signed Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between both nations, designed to boost trade, tourism, and cultural ties.

Government Applause

Welcoming the flight, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Muhammed Idris, said the direct link reflects President Bola Tinubu’s policy of prioritizing Nigeria in global partnerships.

“This is not only about trade and investment; it is also about cultural and social connections between two parts of the world,” he stated.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), who was on board, described the flight as a turning point in Nigeria’s aviation history and in strengthening bilateral relations with Brazil.

Strengthening Nigeria’s Global Aviation Footprint

Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest carrier, has once again expanded its international reach, connecting West Africa directly to South America. Officials said this would not only make travel easier but also open up business opportunities, tourism exchanges, and cultural partnerships.

The maiden flight carried a high-level delegation, including:

  • Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy

  • Minister of Defence

  • Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment

  • Chairman/CEO, Nigeria Diaspora Commission

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) was represented at the event by its Lagos Regional Manager, Barr. Olubukola Teriba, on behalf of the DG, Captain Chris Najomo.

Final Thoughts

With this direct flight, Nigeria positions itself as a continental hub bridging Africa and South America. Industry stakeholders say this milestone could pave the way for more bilateral aviation links in the future, boosting trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
