Nigeria Now 4th Highest Non-EU Nationality Migrating to the UK

New migration data for the year ending June 2025 shows that Nigerians have emerged as the fourth-largest group of non-EU+ nationals arriving in the United Kingdom. Out of all non-EU+ immigrants, about 40,000 were Nigerians. Of those, roughly 25,000 came for study, 12,000 for work, and the remaining 3,000 via other permitted routes.

The three nationalities ahead of Nigeria are India (143,000 arrivals), China (66,000 arrivals), and Pakistan (63,000 arrivals). This ranking confirms Nigeria’s significant share among non-EU+ immigrant communities heading to the UK, alongside these major source countries.

Although overall migration to the UK has declined — driven by reduced inflows of non-EU+ students and workers, fewer dependants, and tighter visa and immigration rules — Nigeria continues to be a key origin country. The resilience of Nigerian immigration reflects ongoing demand for work, study, and resettlement opportunities in the UK.

What This Means for Aspiring Migrants From Nigeria

  • For students: The high uptake suggests Nigeria remains a strong source country for UK study visas. But with declining overall numbers, early and well-prepared applications will be more important than ever.

  • For job seekers: Work-related entries remain a significant portion of Nigerian arrivals. Given stricter visa and immigration rules, emphasise strong documentation and compliance with new thresholds.

  • For immigration planners: The shift underscores evolving migration patterns — non-EU+ origin, including Nigeria, now dominate immigration flows into the UK. But decreased overall inflow may mean more scrutiny and competition.
