The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to begin real-time monitoring of foreigners who overstay their visas in the country. The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen immigration control, improve border security, and ensure compliance with Nigeria’s visa regulations.
According to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the government now has the technological capability to identify and track individuals who remain in Nigeria beyond the validity of their visas. This capability is powered by a newly established monitoring infrastructure within the country’s immigration system.
Technology-Driven Immigration Monitoring
At the center of the new system is an Integrated Operations Centre developed by the Nigeria Immigration Service. The platform uses advanced data systems to monitor the movement of travelers entering the country and to detect individuals who fail to comply with visa conditions.
The system consolidates immigration records and allows authorities to review travel data spanning several years. This makes it possible for officials to identify foreigners currently residing in Nigeria without valid immigration status and take appropriate enforcement action.
Officials say the goal is to bring Nigeria’s migration control systems closer to international standards where visa compliance is strictly monitored. The new digital infrastructure will also support better management of expatriates and strengthen overall border governance.
What This Means for Foreign Visitors
With the new monitoring framework in place, immigration authorities are expected to intensify enforcement against visa violations. Foreign nationals visiting Nigeria will need to ensure they comply with their visa conditions, including leaving the country before their visa expires or applying for proper extensions when necessary.
The government believes the technology-driven approach will help improve transparency in migration management while protecting national security and maintaining accurate records of travelers entering the country.
