South Africa to launch AI-driven digital visa system for tourists in September 2025

South Africa is set to transform the way international travellers access its borders. Beginning September 2025, the country will launch an AI-powered Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for short-term visitors from visa-required nations—ushering in a new era of digital, paperless travel clearance.

The new system is not only expected to replace the current e-Visa for many countries, but also promises instant approvals, reduced wait times, and fraud-resistant processing, all accessible via mobile devices.

✅ What is the ETA System?

Unveiled by Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber and demonstrated to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ETA is a fully digital visa system that uses artificial intelligence to process applications in seconds, eliminating the need for traditional paperwork or in-person interviews.

“This is a real ETA visa, stored in my real smartphone wallet. It was issued online within seconds,” said Schreiber on June 12, 2025, showcasing the system’s readiness.

✅ Who Will Need It?

The ETA will be required for short-term tourist visits (under 90 days) from countries that currently need visas to enter South Africa. While the final list is yet to be confirmed, expected eligible countries include:

  • Asia: India, China, Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Iran

  • Africa: Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Tunisia, Cameroon

  • South America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru

  • Eastern Europe: Russia, Ukraine

These nations currently access South Africa through the e-Visa system, which the ETA is likely to replace or integrate with.

✅ Key Features of the ETA

  • AI-Driven Processing: Applications approved in seconds

  • Mobile-First: Apply, store, and show visa directly from your smartphone

  • No More Paperwork: No in-person appointments or long border queues

  • Enhanced Security: Built-in fraud prevention tools

  • Real-Time Access: Available from anywhere with internet access

✅ What Travellers Should Watch For

Though the current e-Visa portal remains active, travellers should:

  • Monitor announcements from the Department of Home Affairs

  • Look out for the final list of countries included in ETA rollout

  • Be aware of how the ETA will function alongside or replace the e-Visa

More exciting still, the ETA system is part of a larger plan. The South African government aims to eventually expand this AI-driven platform to all visa categories, including work, study, and residency permits.
