The United Kingdom is introducing new changes to its travel authorization system, including a higher application fee for the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and the removal of visa-free access for two countries. These updates form part of the UK government’s broader efforts to strengthen border security and manage international travel more effectively.
ETA Fee Set to Rise to £20
Beginning April 8, 2026, the cost of applying for the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation will increase from £16 to £20, representing a 25% rise.
The ETA is a digital travel clearance required for visitors from visa-exempt countries before they travel to the UK. It is not a visa but a pre-travel authorization that allows travelers to board flights or other transport to the UK.
Once approved, an ETA allows multiple visits of up to six months per trip and remains valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires.
Two Countries Lose Visa-Free Access
Alongside the fee increase, the UK government has also changed entry rules for travelers from Nicaragua and Saint Lucia. Citizens of these countries will no longer be able to travel to the UK using the ETA system.
Instead, they will now be required to apply for a standard visitor visa before traveling to the UK.
To reduce disruption to travelers who may already have planned trips, the government introduced a short transition period. During this window, travelers from the affected countries can still enter the UK if they already hold a valid ETA or booked their travel before the policy change was announced.
What This Means for Travelers
The update reflects a growing trend among countries introducing digital travel authorization systems to screen visitors before arrival. For travelers, it also means additional steps and costs when planning trips to destinations that previously allowed visa-free entry.
As immigration policies continue to evolve, travelers are advised to stay informed about visa requirements, travel authorizations, and entry rules before booking international trips.
